Philip Ladd

What do you like best about being a part of the Dwight Rudd team?
I’ve worked at Dwight Rudd for over 40 years, and so much has changed. The company is bigger, we are always bringing in new team members, insurance has become more complex, and technology has totally changed our client’s expectations and, in turn, how we run our business. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to our clients.   I’ve always believed that insurance is an important part of everyone’s financial plan, and I think we do a great job advising our clients.   That’s what I like the best.

What do you love to do outside of work?
My main interest outside of work is Perkins School for the Blind, where I’ve been involved for the past 13 years. I led the last strategic planning committee, and now am head of the committee overseeing our international work. There are six million children around the world with vision impairment and other disabilities who get little or no educational support. We plan to train a million teachers to reach these six million kids.  The challenges sometimes seem insurmountable, but a recent trip to our programs in Croatia and Serbia reinforced the need, and Perkins seems to be the only organization able to help these children.  For fun I play squash, sail, garden, travel fairly frequently, and read lots of books.

How do you want your clients to view their insurance?
I want my clients to view their insurance as an essential part of their financial planning, and work with us to design an insurance program that protects their assets and income stream. The ideal client also recognizes that a smart insurance buying decision is based on an analysis of coverage, claim-paying practices, and cost. 

On a professional level, what are your biggest accomplishments?
The next generation of leaders at Dwight Rudd is already running the company on a day-to-day basis, and will be well-qualified to full take over the company when I sell the company to them and retire. Getting them to this point has involved an investment of time and resources, but it’s been highly rewarding to see them learn and grow, and to watch the important changes they are making to the business. I think I’m leaving our clients in very capable hands.
