A comprehensive residential water leak detection system, equipped with an automated water shut-off valve, intelligently adapts to the water consumption patterns within your household. The system promptly notifies you of any abnormal flow occurrences that may indicate a potential leak or plumbing fixture overflow, and can automatically shut down the water supply to your home without your intervention. If water runs undetected for even half of a day, it is likely you'll lose the use of your home for many months while cleanup and repairs take place. Water damage claims are ugly and almost entirely avoidable with these valves.

This advanced technology offers an accessible and cost-effective means of safeguarding your home against water-related emergencies.

Cost and Installation

The installation of this system can be easily carried out by any licensed plumber. The total cost varies by the type of valve and the complexity of the installation. A basic valve and an easy installation would start at about $1,500. Some insurance companies will provide a discount off of your homeowners insurance premium when a system installed. We think this is a small price to pay for enhanced control and peace of mind.

Alternatively, you can connect with a service provider like Beagle Services (licensed in these states) or Water Security Solutions, national installers trusted by many of our top insurance companies. Technicians can provide a comprehensive consultation and install your system in the same day.

For clients insuring their homes through Cincinnati or Chubb Insurance, an exclusive managed solution is available through Asurion LeakProtect. Asurion manages the entire process, from selecting the right device to coordinating installation and ongoing annual monitoring, creating a simple, hassle-free experience.

How these systems detect a leak

The devices below fall into two approaches. Both install on your main water line and both can shut the water off on their own. Neither one is better across the board. Which one fits depends on your plumbing and how predictable your water use is.

Flow-based

Watches how much water is flowing and for how long. If water keeps running past the limits programmed into the device, it shuts off. These systems are straightforward and catch very small leaks well, but the settings need to be tuned to your household so normal long uses like filling a pool or running irrigation do not trip them.

AI-based

Spends a learning period getting to know how your home normally uses water, then flags anything unusual. These tend to produce fewer nuisance shutoffs and give you more detail about which fixtures are using water, though automatic shutoff does not turn on until the learning period is complete.

Hybrid

Offers both. You can set your own flow and time limits, or let the device learn your household's patterns and set them for you. Useful if you want to start with manual control and switch later.

You stay in control either way. Every system on this list includes home and away modes and manual overrides, so you can tell it to expect unusual water use before it happens. Filling a pool, running irrigation, hosting guests, or leaving for a month are all things you can account for ahead of time rather than working around an unexpected shutoff. Typically, all of this can be controlled from a simple app on your smartphone.
